Judy’s Pick of the Day | Friday 18 December

The latest series ends with a double bill. First up Allison meets bank employee Mrs Boddicker (Moonlighting’s Allyce Beasley) who seems to be dreaming about the same robbery as her, but their accounts of it vary. Then in the finale, Allison has terrifying dreams in which her whole family is murdered by a Mexican drug cartel assassin.

After a local councilman is caught with a hooker, he reveals a secret that stuns Sam. Meanwhile, Annie meets Ray’s wife, Denise, for the first time and Gene has an emptional confrontation with his daughter.

There are guest stars galore in tonight’s episode. Allison is forced to turn to her former employer Cynthia Keener (a welcome return for Anjelica Huston), who is now in prison, after she dreams about one of Keener’s old cases.  Balthazar Getty (Brothers & Sisters) and Rumer Willis (daughter of Bruce) also pop up. 

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & FX HD
Sam and Chris get a taste of the rock and roll lifestyle when they investigate death threats made against rock star Sebastian Grace.  As Sebastian and his groupie, Rocket Girl, wait for UFOs in a to a swamp, they give Chris a drink laced with LSD…

Allison falls into a coma during an investigation. As she arrives at the hospital, a patient called Todd Emory (played by Arrested Development’s Jeffrey Tambor) leaves and heads to the Dubois house, claiming that Allison’s spirit is inside him.

One week the team are dealing with a city-wide blackout, the next they are babysitting children - that’s why we love this show.   When the death of a Marine is apparently connected to a government think tank which employs child prodigies, Gibbs and the team must put their Thanksgiving plans on hold to protect a 12-year-old prodigy who may be the killer’s next intended victim. 

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & FX HD
As Sam gets a mysterious call tipping him off about a headless body, a severed head is delivered to the precinct. This leads to the discovery of a series of grisly decapitations which may involve Det. Carling’s brother.

In the concluding episode of the three-part story, Allison continues to dream about the serial killer and starts to realise that her boss, Mr Lydecker, is preventing her from telling Devalos in order to protect the killer’s identity. But then she suspects that Lydecker himself is in danger.

Gibbs and the team are in the dark – literally – when a botched robbery leads to the death of a lieutenant and causes a city-wide blackout.  Without power, they must use old-fashioned methods of detection to find out what happened.

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & HD
Gene Hunt and his detectives compete with the cops from Lieutenant’s Nunzio’s 144th squad when they both try to solve a bank robbery that has links to the Russian Mafia. Meanwhile, Sam finds himself falling for a social worker.

In the second part of a three-part story, Allison continues to have dreams about a serial killer which she tells Devalos and Scalion about, but when her new boss finds out, he tells her that her dreams belong to the Lydecker Corporation now and forbids her from sharing them with others.

The personal and the professional worlds of Vance collide in dramatic fashion when an assassin from his past threatens the safety of his family once again and his team must try to protect them and help their boss deal with his troubled past.

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & HD
While searching for a kidnapped baby, Sam realises that his own father may have been involved in the crime, which may explain why he disappeared the day of Sam’s fourth birthday party and also why Sam has travelled back in time.

In the first episode of a three-part story, Allison leaves the DA’s office to work for the Lydecker Corporation who want to use her abilities to test products for them, but she can’t stop dreaming about a serial killer on the loose. Uh-oh.

When two mercenaries are found murdered on one of Gibbs’ boats, he is forced to look at the involvement of his former mentor Mike Franks in the killings and try to prevent an international incident.

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & HD
In 2008, the plug will be pulled on Sam if he doesn’t out of his coma, while in 1973 he has to diffuse a deadly face-off in a hospital where a gunman is holding a surgeon hostage demanding that he treats his brother.

A bonus tonight with a two-part episode. Allison is stalked by a man who believes that she is the devil and is determined to get rid of her. When the police find disturbing pictures of Allison’s daughters at his house, the whole family is immediately put under police guard.

9pm, NCIS, FX & FX HD
A lesson is to be learned with this episode - you can be too much of a practical joker. A Marine, notorious for being a prankster, is found dead on Halloween and it seems that his love of practical jokes might have been the motive for his murder.

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & HD
There are two top guest stars to look out for in tonight’s episode - Whoopi Golberg and Clarke Peters from The Wire - as Sam investigates the death of  an African American woman who was thrown from a roof by a Puerto Rican, leading to racial conflict between the two communities.

In the first episode of two episodes showing tonight, Dawson’s Creek’s James Van Der Beek guests as a man who may or may not have killed his mother for money. In the far more intriguing second episode, Allison wakes up five years in the past and realises that Devalos is going to convict an innocent man. So she has to convince him of her abilities long before they first met. Confusing or brilliant? You decide.

9pm, NCIS, FX & FX HD
Gibbs and co investigate the death of a blogger who turned up dead after accusing the NCIS of a cover up over a previous case. The team must re-investigate the original case to clear their names.

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & HD
The past is always present for Sam Tyler and never more so than in this episode. While investigating the death of a Vietnam War veteran, Sam returns to the neighbourhood he grew up in and has an emotional encounter with his younger self.

Allison comes over all Tim Roth in Lie to Me when, following an ususual dream,  she wakes up with the ability to tell if someone is lying.  A very useful skill to have in a murder investigation.

9pm, NCIS, FX & FX HD
The seventh series has hit the ground running and tonight’s episode doesn’t disappoint. The murder of a Marine and his two friends is linked to events in the past and Gibbs has Ziva’s future is in his hands.

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & HD
There is something very likeable about Jason O’Mara as Sam Tyler, though Harvey Keitel cannot wipeout memories of Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt. Tonight Sam gets caught up in the middle of an investigation into a gang of armed robbers who have killed four people.

The ghost of creepy FBI profiler Agent Cooper appears to Allison with information on a serial killer. But, as the investigation unfolds, Allison starts to question his role in the murders.

NEW SERIES Well done those lovely people at FX. We don’t have to wait until next year for the resolution to last week’s cliff-hanging finale because they are showing the new seventh series straightaway. Without giving too much away, life will never be the same again for Ziva.

10pm, Life on Mars USA, FX & HD
NEW SERIES Okay, it hasn’t got John Simm or Philip Glenister in it, but it’s fun watching Jason O’Mara and Harvey Keitel step into their shoes in this US version of the hit British show. New York detective Sam Tyler is hit by a car in 2008 and wakes up in 1973 where there are no computers or forensics to help with the crime-solving - just old-fashioned (and brutal) detective work.
