Don’t forget you can see Danny McBride’s new comedy, Eastbound and Down, on Thursdays at 10pm on FX.

True Blood - the sitcom?

Some people really have too much time on their hands - thank goodness! The latest painstaking project to catch our eye is this reimagining of True Blood as a sitcom, centred round the staff at Merlotte’s bar and grill… Incidentally, if you missed the show on FX, or just want to watch it all again, you’ll be pleased to know Channel 4 are going to be showing series one, starting on Monday 5th October.

Competition time | Win a Nintendo DS Lite and MLB 2009 All Stars game

Nintendo Glow FX’d

Talk about a slamdunk of a prize! No wait, that’s basketball, isn’t it…

This is the best time of the year for new TV shows, and FX are doing their bit with Eastbound & Down, the brand new show from the comedy ratpack of Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Danny McBride and Jody Hill, which begins on FX on Thursday 1st October at 10pm.

The show stars Danny McBride as Kenny Powers, a former professional baseball pitcher whose career has hit the skids, forcing him to return to his hometown and take a job as a high-school PE teacher.

Unsurprisingly, humility isn’t one of Kenny’s strengths, so he has lots of run-ins with the locals as he tries to command the respect he thinks he deserves. Not content with trying to re-establish his sporting legend status, Kenny also tries to make the moves on former high-school squeeze April, now a teacher engaged to the school’s principal.

The show also stars Will Ferrell in a small but perfectly formed role as superbly coiffed second-hand car salesman Ashley Schaeffer. We’ll share some preview clips with you later on today and tomorrow to give you a taste of what’s to come… In the meantime, click on the thumbnails below for a closer look at the characters involved, and check out FX’s dedicated Eastbound & Down website, fxuk.com/eastbound.

To celebrate the beginning of Eastbound & Down, FX are very generously giving away a Nintendo DS Lite and an MLB 2009 All Stars game, so you can hone your baseball skills, pitching, hitting and fielding in the major league!

To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is answer this question:

Q. In which stoner comedy did Danny McBride recently star alongside Seth Rogen and James Franco?

US shows we’re looking forward to | True Blood

 True Blood

We’ve been waiting for True Blood to cross the Atlantic since Spring, but it’s probably for the best that it didn’t come along earlier, what with Lost and Prison Break and Brothers & Sisters and Dexter and everything else that we had to watch!

Anyway, it’s going to be on FX this July, and we’re very very excited about it.

In a small Louisiana town, vampires have gone mainstream, thanks to the creation of synthetic blood, and have a fragile co-existence with the humans there. Anna Pacquin seems to be channelling Holly Hunter in her portrayal of Sookie, a young woman who has an ability to hear other people’s thoughts. Sookie draws the attention of a vampire called Bill, and the two develop an unlikely relationship. Unfortunately, not all the local vampires are keen on drinking fake blood, and their attacks on humans lead to a vigilante group forming against the bloodsuckers.

The show is extremely dark (visually and emotionally!), and was one of the lucky shows that got the green light for a second series in the US, so you can rest assured that you’re not going to get addicted to something that gets canned!

Here’s the trailer. FX will also be showing it on their HD channel, so you can enjoy all the blood and gore in detail. Nice.

Calling all True Blood fans - It’s the blood-curdlingly cool new trailer for season two!

Though we still haven’t had the first season in the UK yet, the US is gearing up for a second run of uber-sexy vampire thriller True Blood - and here’s the awesome new trailer for it, featuring all the cast and a tune by Bob Dylan.

Don’t worry UK fans - this trailer contains plenty of blood, but no spoilers…

Competition time | Dexter’s back, and he’s… bobbing???

dexter-bobble-head-copy.jpg

No, of course, not - everyone’s favourite serial killer has still got that lean, mean murderous streak we all know and love.

Series three of Dexter, which returns to the UK on FX on Friday 24th April, sees our somewhat questionable hero emerge as a much more confident killer after getting off scott-free for his crimes in the previous series. On top of that, he develops an unlikely and dangerous friendship with politician Miguel Prado (The West Wing’s Jimmy Smits), who seems to share Dexter’s bloodlust.

To celebrate Dexter’s return, the fab folk at FX have given us 5 of these marvellous Dexter Bobble Head dolls that we, generous to a fault, are passing on to you!

All of this can only mean one thing - it’s competition time on TV Spy. To be in with a chance of winning one of the dolls, all you have to do is answer this fiendishly tough question:

Q. Which other cult US drama did Michael C Hall appear in before he became the murderous Dexter?

Email us your answer, with ‘Dexter competition’ in the subject line, at tvspy@ipcmedia.com. The competition will close on Friday 24th, just as the new series starts!

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept entries submitted via the comments section of our blog. All entries must be via email.

We will collect your personal email data solely to process your competition entry. Prize will be awarded to the first 5 correct entries drawn at random under independent supervision after the competition closes at noon on Friday 24th.  We will notify the winners by email within 21 days of this closing date. The prize consists of 1 Dexter Bobble Head Doll. Promoter: IPC Media. Prize Supplier: FX.

Great news for neck-biters… HBO’s True Blood gets a second series!

True Blood

We’re loving HBO’s creepy new, metaphor-laden Deep South drama series True Blood – and we’re not alone it seems as, after the second episode recorded a record-breaking increase in the number of viewers, it has already been commissioned for a second run.

Now all we need is for some brave channel in the UK to snap it up – come on FX, we’re looking at you. Anyway, to celebrate here are the fantastically sinister new opening credits, featuring the tune Bad Things by Jace Everett.

Eleven brand new US shows we just can’t wait to see (11/11) | Breaking Bad

BREAKING BAD

Starts FX, 28 September

On the surface Walter White, the hero of FX’s deliciously dark new comedy drama Breaking Bad, lives a comfortable, settled life as an ordinary family man who’s able to provide for his disabled son by working as a high-school chemistry teacher and a part-time car-washer.

But Walter’s problems are mounting up. He’s struggling to provide for his disabled son and, the day after his 50th birthday, is diagnosed with lung cancer and given two years to live. With little savings to fall back on, Walter comes up with a solution – he’s going to misuse his chemistry skills and is breaking bad! He cashes in his retirement fund for a motorhome to act as a mobile lab for his entry into the drugs trade.

Bryan Cranston, best known for his comedy roles as hapless dad Hal in Malcolm in the Middle and Jerry’s ‘regifting’ dentist Tim Whatley in Seinfeld, is superb as the stressed-out Walter trying to make his way in this strange, disturbing new world, and gets great support from Aaron Paul as his former student and new partner, Jesse Pinkman.

Breaking Bad is a dark comedy which sees Walter and Jesse as basically decent guys now faced with all sorts of terrible dilemmas. In an early episode, Walter tosses a coin to see who gets to finish off one bad guy and who gets to dissolve the other dead bad guy in a tub of acid. Jesse does the dissolving in his bath tub, but it’s a tub that’s not suitable for filling with acid. The result is as gory as it is funny.

While definitely not one for the easily-offended or those of a squeamish disposition, Breaking Bad is one of the most strikingly original new dramas we’ve seen in ages. Below is a trailer for the first series to give you a taste of what to expect…
