My Own Worst Enemy

NEW SERIES Christian Slater gets his first big telly role as a mild-mannered family man who is horrified to discover he’s got a government-implanted micro-chip in his brain that means he turns into a violent superspy when his controllers flick a switch, and his life gets exceedingly complicated as his two worlds collide.

Hank decides to do some digging on Ashby, so he tries to find his lost love, Janie Jones, and Charlie comes up with the genius idea of turning his home into the set of his movie, becoming a part of the film.

A young writer who worked her way up from the Bronx is murdered, and Goren and Eames initially suspect her drug-dealing rapper boyfriend of killing her, but eventually turn their attentions to the seemingly restrained literary world.  • catch it again tomorrow night, 8pm

9pm, The Mentalist, Five
A convicted murderer contacts Jane claiming he’s innocent, and that he has information about his nemesis, Red John. Jane starts breaking every rule in the book to get him to talk, but the case reveals just how well-connected Red John is.

9pm, My Name Is Earl, E4
Earl is really in the doghouse after Randy discovers he ruined his one and only chance at love with a childhood sweetheart called Pinkie, and Earl has to find a way to reunite the couple. Thankfully, Pinkie hasn’t gotten far…

SERIES FINALE It’s the end of the line for the long-running show, which draws to a close with a feature-length episode full of the sort of fast-paced emotional drama that made it such a favourite for so long.

A young Arabic diver is washes up on shore, and the team’s initial instinct is to suspect he’s involved with terrorists, but then Goren and Eames discover the victim was part of a trio of con artists working as salvagers for a wealthy local man.

A man is killed in an arson attack, and then similar attacks reveal a link to their shared history in the military, but there’s no obvious suspect and Patrick decides to pull another of his tricks to flush out the killer.

In an episode with a serious yuck factor, a body is found in a wine barrel and the remains are fairly gooey, but not so liquified that they can’t be identified as a wine critic who obviously gave one too many bad reviews.

Earl works on a list item relating to his childhood hero, Chaz Dalton, who runs a space academy, but then he discovers the man is an imposter using the identity to make money. Meanwhile, Darnell makes up for time lost in the witness protection programme using a website called ‘Buddybook’.

Morris, Brenner and Gates reveal their karaoke skills when they volunteer at a hospital-based camp for kids who’ve had heart surgery, and Banfield’s hopes of adopting the abandoned baby look like being dashed.

As biographer to music mogul Lew Ashby, Hank gets caught up in the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, and faces extreme temptation when a posse of prostitutes arrives to entertain the band, including blast from the past Beatrice Trixie.

The Chief sends half of his staff out to Derek’s trailer to try to make him come back, but his melancholy proves to be seriously infectious, and the hospital is abuzz as Mark prepares for a rare face transplant surgery. Even though you know it’s prosthetics, you’ll still wince…

A dentist is murdered by the mother of one of his patients (that must have been a seriously bad filling), and Goren and Eames follow the evidence trail to a company that seems to have been the target of a criminal conspiracy involving contaminated mouthwash.

Patrick is confronted with someone who knows almost as many tricks as he does when a medium is implicated in a wealthy woman’s death, and the case brings up some extremely painful memories about his wife and son.

Bones adds body-snatching to her CV this week when she thinks a recently deceased colleague was actually murdered; and then in the second of tonight’s episodes an old pal of Booth flies in from Toyko to investigate after his sister’s head is found on a spike. You’ll be impressed by Angela’s gender-defining methods.

Eighties soap queens Morgan Fairchild and Joan Van Ark guest-star as two of Joy’s new neighbours who turn to Earl to help them with their guilt-based insomnia after he accidentally blinds one of their dogs with his car exhaust fumes.

It’s another double bill, and the second one is the one you’ve all been waiting for, as George Clooney finally reprises his role as delectable Doug Ross, now based in Seattle alongside wife Carol (Julianna Margulies). Back in Chicago, Morris gets a shock when his cop girlfriend is admitted to the ER.

Six things we learned today | Thursday 4 December

Knight Rider is axed

1. Sources suggest that the all-new Knight Rider has been axed.

2. Slacker comedy drama Reaper’s back in March and E! have rounded up all the winter TV return dates.

3. Pulp Fiction and Caprica star Eric Stoltz will be making a killing in Grey’s Anatomy.

4. David Duchovny vehicle Californication has been granted a third season.

5. Jump on the True Blood bandwagon early with some of the merchandise now available.
