True Blood - the sitcom?

Some people really have too much time on their hands - thank goodness! The latest painstaking project to catch our eye is this reimagining of True Blood as a sitcom, centred round the staff at Merlotte’s bar and grill… Incidentally, if you missed the show on FX, or just want to watch it all again, you’ll be pleased to know Channel 4 are going to be showing series one, starting on Monday 5th October.

US shows we’re looking forward to | True Blood

 True Blood

We’ve been waiting for True Blood to cross the Atlantic since Spring, but it’s probably for the best that it didn’t come along earlier, what with Lost and Prison Break and Brothers & Sisters and Dexter and everything else that we had to watch!

Anyway, it’s going to be on FX this July, and we’re very very excited about it.

In a small Louisiana town, vampires have gone mainstream, thanks to the creation of synthetic blood, and have a fragile co-existence with the humans there. Anna Pacquin seems to be channelling Holly Hunter in her portrayal of Sookie, a young woman who has an ability to hear other people’s thoughts. Sookie draws the attention of a vampire called Bill, and the two develop an unlikely relationship. Unfortunately, not all the local vampires are keen on drinking fake blood, and their attacks on humans lead to a vigilante group forming against the bloodsuckers.

The show is extremely dark (visually and emotionally!), and was one of the lucky shows that got the green light for a second series in the US, so you can rest assured that you’re not going to get addicted to something that gets canned!

Here’s the trailer. FX will also be showing it on their HD channel, so you can enjoy all the blood and gore in detail. Nice.

Fangtastic news, folks… Not long to go now until True Blood starts in the UK!

Just a quick heads-up, but we have it on good authority that True Blood, the magnificent new vampire series from Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball, will be starting on FX in the middle of July. Not long to go now!

In the meantime, we thought you’d like this rather swanky half-hour featurette from HBO all about the show. Be warned, though: it contains some spoilers…

True Blood airing in the UK… some good news and some less good news

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

We’ve had our Sherlock Holmes-style deerstalkers on and been investigating when HBO’s fantastic vampire drama series True Blood is coming to UK shores. The good news is that we can confirm that it’s been snapped up by the ace digital channel FX. The bad news is we’ve just learned that it’s not scheduled to air until next summer – so all you blood-thirsty fans out there are in for a bit of a wait. Thankfully, there’s plenty of great new US drama to keep us going until then, and we’ll keep you updated on all things True Blood-related until then.

Great news for neck-biters… HBO’s True Blood gets a second series!

True Blood

We’re loving HBO’s creepy new, metaphor-laden Deep South drama series True Blood – and we’re not alone it seems as, after the second episode recorded a record-breaking increase in the number of viewers, it has already been commissioned for a second run.

Now all we need is for some brave channel in the UK to snap it up – come on FX, we’re looking at you. Anyway, to celebrate here are the fantastically sinister new opening credits, featuring the tune Bad Things by Jace Everett.

True Blood | Time for a trailer

We’ve been rattling on about HBO’s genre defying vamp-flavoured new drama series True Blood for a while now. Now we can finally show you the trailer – so what do you make of it?

Meanwhile, the internet is filling up with bizarre viral marketing sites for the show. Are you pro-vamp or anti-blood suckers? There’s even a vampire-human dating service out there if you’re interested in that sort of thing.

This looks set to me one of the most interesting new series of the autumn – when, though, will one of our lovely British broadcasters snap it up?

True Blood | First look at the pilot episode

true-blood-hbo.jpg

We’ve been following the viral marketing campaign for HBO’s hot new fall drama True Blood for the past month and now we’ve finally had a sneak peek at the rough-cut pilot episode that’s been doing the rounds. So what can we expect from Six Feet Under scribe Alan Ball’s new show?

Well, calling it a vampire drama series is misleading. In fact, after the opening credits there’s only one bloodsucker on show. Yes, True Blood’s conceit is that vampires have outed themselves and are trying to become integrated into society, supping synthetic blood to ethically fulfill their blood lust. But the show is set at a local level - small-town America, where the arrival of the only vampire in the village causes a mixture of curiosity, lust and fear.

And it’s not just the vamps you’ve got to look out for. The pilot focuses on steak house waitress Sookie (Anna Paquin) who appears to be psychic, and we catch a glimpse of another character who seems to have telekinetic powers. Sukie’s instantly drawn to vamp Bill (British actor Steven Moyer) despite being warned off by her colleagues. Bill (not the most exciting of vampire names) finds himself in danger as vampire blood is being used as a designer drug and can fetch thousands of dollars on the black market. Also in the mix is Sukie’s brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten - Vinnie in Home and Away) who’s implicated in the murder of a local, fang-banging woman.

True Blood doesn’t play like your typical fantasy drama series - it’s more akin to Twin Peaks with it’s depiction of sleepy but sordid small-town life or cult Bible-belt horror American Gothic.  And being from HBO, there’s sex, swearing and nudity. It’s difficult to see how the series will pan out and, as it can’t be easily pigeon-holed, may not attract the huge following of Heroes or Lost. However, the pilot episode is brimming with promise and mystery - and Anna Paquin is absolutely beguiling in the lead role. This really could be the very definition of a cult classic.

Last week we brought you news of Blood Copy, the blog that’s chronicling the seedier side of the uneasy truce between humankind and the newly out-and-proud vampires - which may be something to do with Six Feet Under scribe Alan Ball’s blood-sucking new drama series. Well, now it seems the company behind the vamps’ favourite, more ethical tipple - new synthetic blood drink Tru Blood - is stepping up its marketing campaign with banner ads around the world in China, South Korea and Russia (see below), as well as the new TV commercial above. We’re closely following this intriguing internet trail ready for the launch of HBO’s True Blood in September and will keep you updated as more facts emerge.
