James May’s Toy Stories (BBC2, 8.00pm)
The other Top Gear presenter, the one who’s not Clarkson or the Hamster, presents this quirky challenge series in which the host gets to indulge his passion for not growing up. Under the slightly woolly concept that ‘kids these days don’t appreciate real toys’, James May tries to make young whippersnappers see the wonder of Airfix kits, Scalextric and Meccano by ’supersizing’ these toys. Why supersizing is necessary escapes us, but never mind. Over the course of four weeks, we can look forward to a house made of Lego, fully functional bridges constructed using Meccano by ’supersizing’ these toys. Why supersizing is necessary escapes us, but nevermind. Over the course of four weeks, we can look forward to a house made of Lego, fully functional bridges constructed using Meccano and a huge Scalextric track. Tonight, he cajoles like-minded adults and a group of reluctant teenagers to help him build a full-sized Spitfire out of Airfix. There’s an impressively long trailer here too.
The Force (Channel 4, 9.00pm)
This brilliant series concludes with a case dating from September 2007, when a lit match was flicked into a petrol can in a block of flats in Portsmouth. The resulting fire ripped through the building and killed one man. After nine months of frustrated investigations, Hampshire’s Major Crime Unit appoint an experienced Detective Chief Inspector to take over the case - the third senior officer to take charge of the investigation - and a series of arrests is soon made… That makes this bloke sound like Gene Hunt!
