EastEnders (BBC1, 7.30pm)
Sam is released from jail tonight and probably just wants a low-key return to the Vic and to make herself at home. Peggy, however, thinks that entering her daughter in the Miss Queen Vic contest is a much better idea. Sam faces competition from Stacey, whose rather strange outfit-revealing routine is strange to say the least but does result in a certain amount of male attention. Elsewhere, Tanya gets a shock when a drunken Ian mistakenly climbs into bed with her. It’s difficult to think of many things worse that could happen to the poor lass.
Local Hero (Channel 4, 1.20pm)
In a day bereft of good TV shows, thank goodness for another showing of Bill Forsyth’s wonderfully whimsical comedy from 1983 - complete with probably the most beautifully positioned phone box in the history of cinema. Peter Riegert’s American oil company executive travels to Scotland to buy up an entire coastal village that is the perfect location for a new oil refinery. While many of the locals are happy to take the money and run, old timer Ben Knox (Fulton ‘Fletcharh!!’ Mackay) is having none of it. The final scene on the beach when the big oil boss (Burt Lancaster) speaks directly to Knox is the perfect example of the less-is-more rule. There’s been lots of good Scottish-themed stuff on BBC4 at the moment too. The excellent Tweed concludes this evening and the adaptation of Iain Bank’s The Crow Road (Wednesday) is always worth a repeat viewing.
