Couch Potato Pickings | Dreamgirls, and reality TV show contestants who’ve actually made it

Beyonce Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Jennifer Hudson

This movie version of the popular stage musical, very loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and The Supremes, stars music industry darling Beyoncé. However, the real star of this film is Jennifer Hudson. She totally outshines her co-stars  Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy, and even Ms Knowles fades into the shadows when Hudson’s around.

Dreamgirls, Jennifer Hudson

After competing in American Idol in 2004, Hudson made her film debut in Dreamgirls in 2006, a role which won her an Oscar. More recently she’s starred in Sex and the City and The Secret Life of Bees and of course she sung at the Michael Jackson memorial concert. She’s well and truly made it, and with talent like hers, she deserves to.

So with the X Factor final this weekend, I’ve been wondering what other reality TV singing stars have made it big over the past decade:

Hear’Say

The original reality TV talent show Popstars gave us Hear’say, resulting in Corrie star Kym Marsh and face of the M&S advertising campaigns Myleene Klass. Klass also starred in the movie Igor as the voice of Dr Holzwurm.

Liberty X

I liked these Popstars finalists, but after disbanding they’ve all just floated around the Reality TV world doing nothing outstanding. Shame.

Will Young

Since winning Pop Idol in 2002, Will had some big hits (including that one with the Top Gun inspired video) and his  career took off. He’s bagged numerous awards and become a highly successful recording artist. He also starred in the movie Mrs Henderson Presents.

Gareth Gates

Pop Idol runner up Gates may have done a successful West End run in Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat and it’s great that he’s poised to star in Les Mis, but for me he’ll always be the one who sang that annoying song from Ghost - Unchained Melody.

Girls Aloud

St Trinian’s, Girls Aloud

Who?

Only joking. Cheryl Cole is of course the nation’s sweetheart, so how could anybody not know of Girls Aloud. The band starred in the 2007 St Trinian’s film and Sarah Harding has starred in a few additional movies, including St Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold, out at cinemas on 18th December.

Kellie Clarkson

This first American Idol winner is known over here but has a bigger following in the States. Her song The Trouble With Love Is features on the soundtrack to that great festive film Love Actually.

Fantasia Barrino

Hmm, yeah, rings no bells with me either, but she won American Idol Season Three (that’s the same American Idol that introduced Jennifer Hudson  to the world). A film has been made about her life, in which she stars, called Life is not a Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story.

Carrie Underwood

Winner of American Idol in 2005. Underwood is now a massive country music star over in the US, but virtually unknown over here in the UK.

Kellie Pickler

Pickler was a contestant on American Idol in 2006,  but didn’t win. Nevertheless, she’s making a name for herself over in the country music world.  Taylor Swift fans probably know who she is (they’re best mates), but she’s not really known on this side of the Atlantic. I’m keeping my eye on her though as I reckon she’d be perfect for playing the lead role in the Dolly Parton life story stage musical (yes, it’s on the cards). Apparently though, Dolly has someone else in mind for the stage show, and for the film version she’ll be dubbing the singing vocals herself, so the movie could end up starring any actress who’s suitably well-endowed, regardless of their singing talent.

Leona Lewis

Pop Idol 2007 winner Lewis was quickly welcomed from across the pond and has truly made it as an international star. She performs the song I see You in the James Cameron movie Avatar, out in cinemas on 17th December.

Jordin Sparks

Winner of American Idol 2007, Sparks has made it in the US and is probably best known here in the UK for her singles Battlefield and Tattoo.

Alexandra Burke

Has this Pop Idol 2008 winner made it yet? I’m not sure.

JLS

They lost out to Burke in 2008, but their recent UK chart successes show that they’re making up for it now.

So, when you look at how many X Factor, American Idol, Popstar winners have faded out of the public eye over the past decade, it makes you realise that it’s not that many that make it big. It’s a tough world out there.

I’m personally hoping that Geordie Joe McElderry wins X Factor this weekend. He’s got a lovely voice, a lovely face (anyone else think he has a look of Hilary Swank?), and a lovely demeanor. Whether he wins or not doesn’t really matter though. I think he’s got a great career ahead of him, and that potentially includes the movies. The camera loves him and a musical role similar to Hudson’s in Dreamgirls would be perfect. If not that though, I’m sure it won’t be long before he’s  crooning the theme song for the next big Disney movie.

Couch Potato Pickings | Arthur, and a Music Quiz

If you get caught between the Moon and New York City
The best that you can do ……
The best that you can do is fall in love

Even though I know I enjoyed it at the time, I can’t remember all that much about this comedy movie starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minelli, so I’ll be revisiting it today for sure. However, when it comes to that song, Arthur’s Theme - well, I’m humming it right now. Unforgettable. It’s a classic!

How bizarre though that singer Liza Minelli, despite starring in the film, wasn’t the one to sing its theme? No, Christopher Cross was the song’s co-writer and singer.

Now, since I’m on the subject of songs from films, I’ve decided to dream up a short quiz - Name the Film from the Song Lyrics.

See how many films you can identify from these song fragments:

1. Lonely rivers sigh “wait for me, wait for me.” I’ll be coming home wait for me.

2. Love can touch us one time, and last for a lifetime.

3. Two drifters off to see the world. There’s such a lot of world to see.

4. Watching every motion in my foolish lover’s game. On this endless ocean finally lovers know no shame.

5. Your brain is full of spiders, You’ve got garlic on your soul.

6. So, goodbye. Please, don’t cry. We both know I’m not what you, you need.

7. The road is long, there are mountains in our way. But we climb a step every day.

8. At night I could hear the blood in my veins. Just as black and whispering as the rain.

9. If there’s something weird and it don’t look good. Who ya gonna call?

10. Hide it in a hiding place where no one ever goes. Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes.

11. Music can be such a revelation. Dancing around you feel the sweet sensation.

12. Love and compassion, their day is coming. All else are castles built in the air.

13. Pour myself a cup of ambition. Yawnin’, stretchin’, try to come to life.

14. A spider’s touch. Such a cold finger. Beckons you to enter his web of sin.

15. Take me as I am - take my life. I would give it all - I would sacrifice.

So how did you do?

Arthur is showing on ITV2 today at 6pm

Couch Potato Pickings | Top Gun: a film for everyone

Tom Cruise

When this aerial action fest hit cinemas in the 1980s it was all the rage. My best friend had a huge Tom Cruise poster pinned above the decorative headboard of her all-the-rage divan bed. She was obsessed. My girlfriends loved him. Their boyfriends wanted to be him. It was all very heterosexual.

Or so I thought.

As the years have gone by, it’s become quite evident that there were also loads of men who loved Top Gun for its plethora of handsome stars and the perceived homoeroticism of those male bonding scenes. Who can forget Will Young’s homage in the music video for his song Switch It On?

And then, of course, there were all those blushing schoolgirls who had secret crushes on Kelly McGillis - loads of them. And, since it’s less than two months since the actress came out of the closet, I suspect that the McGillis admirers, more than any of the film’s other fans, will be the ones staying in tonight to revisit those old heart-fluttering memories.

Oh it’s so much more than just aerial action. This film truly does have something for everyone.

Showing on ITV1 tonight at 10.15pm

News Muse - G.I.R.L.S! Having fun 80s style

The 80s are sooo back (minus the financial boom)! I keep saying it even though I know just by popping down to TopShop that it’s stating the very obvious.

20th Century Fox also confirmed this fact by announcing that they are doing a remake of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, ya know, the 1985 movie that starred a very young Sarah Jessica Parker and a very young Helen Hunt, sporting bad hairdos and lots of lycra. I recorded the movie off telly and remember watching the VHS tape until it pretty much melted and the image/sound got distorted. At my house it was always ‘D-TV time’ and it used to drive my big brother insane - he was more of a Top Gun kinda guy.

In case your memory fails you, here’s GJWHF in a handy, bite-sized three minute compilation:

You’ve pretty much seen the whole film there.

The script for the new version has only just been commissioned, so this project is still in its infancy. But I’ll be curious to see what they concoct, and while I wait I’ll be enjoying D-TV on crisp-clear DVD!

Cameron Diaz seems to be a girl who always likes to have fun. But I am wondering how much of a good time the bubbly blonde will have when she tries to play the on/off lover of… Tom Cruise! Diaz had problems faking chemistry with Ashton Kutcher in What Happens in Vegas, and he isn’t half as freaky as Tom Cruise. Now that I think about it, I can’t imagine anyone getting it on with Tom Cruise and making it look believable on screen - not even his trouble and strife Katie Holmes!

Cameron Diaz

Anyhow, the film is called Wichita (bless you!) and is a James Mangold action comedy, which will see Cruise playing an international spy. Yawn!

This Sunday I will temporarily be replacing D-TV for some must-see MTV because the MTV Movie Awards are on. And why should you care? Duh! Because the New Moon trailer will be premiering during the show! Because Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be there to introduce it! And because Twilight has been nominated for Best Movie, Best Female Performance, Best Male Breakthrough Performance, Best Song, Best Fight and Best Kiss! That’s six nominations out of 11 awards. Go vampires, go!

News Muse - 1980s redux

It started in a subtle way. Top Gun-style Ray Bans became fashionable again. Then in snuck the legwarmers followed by the leggings, spandex waist belts and oversized tops. Then came Miami Vice the movie and the recent reunion of New Kids on the Block. Yep, the 1980s are sooo back!

Unfortunately, everything wasn’t hunkydory even in those days, and this week (here comes this post’s vague and only link to the News), yuppies of the noughties have been going through similar financial rollercoasters as their predecessors. Mergers, bankruptcies, redundancies, take-overs, the ‘credit crunch’…it’s looking uglier than a botoxed Michael Douglas.

So, considering we should all be careful with our pennies, what better way to save money than staying in all weekend, watching 80s movies and dancing and singing along to their overbearing soundtracks.

I’m proud to say that I still have this - on vinyl!

Here are my Top 5 power-dressing movies from the 1980s:

Michael Douglas teaches Charlie Sheen a few things about illegal trading

baby-boom.jpg2. Baby Boom

Diane Keaton learns to juggle business and nappy duty

Michael J Fox takes a shortcut from mail room to board room and back

Melanie Griffith’s ambitious secretary climbs the highest tree in a corporate jungle

This one was not made in the 80s but captures the era, quotes Wall Street (!) and stars the brilliant Giovanni Ribisi.
