Couch Potato Pickings | Back to the Future and Cadillac Records

Back to the Future, Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd

In 1985 America, teenager Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) joins inventor Dr Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) to test his new time machine. The invention works, but after a brush with some terrorists Marty is accidently sent back to 1955, where he inadvertently interrupts his future parents’ first meeting.

Even though I’ve seen this comedy adventure umpteen times I still love the time travel jokes. These are my top three:

  1. When Marty asks the teen version of his mother Lorraine why she keeps calling him Calvin, and she replies that his name is written all over his underwear.
  2. Doc’s reaction in the 1950s when Marty attempts to prove he’s from the future by revealing the name of the 1985 US president, actor Ronald Reagan.
  3. When Marty is playing Johnny B Goode at the dance and Marvin Berry phones his cousin Chuck and tells him to check out the new sound he’s looking for…

Cadillac Records, Mos Def

On the subject of Chuck Berry, it was in 1955 that this Missouri-born singer-songwriter travelled to Chicago. There he met Leonard Chess of Chess Records, was signed up to the label, and promptly ascended to stardom.

Cadillac Records, Beyonce Knowles

I mention it because the film Cadillac Records, starring Beyoncé Knowles, Mos Def and Adrien Brody is currently available on FilmFlex (and premiering on Sky Box Office tomorrow). A fascinating dip into music history, it tells the story of Chess Records, the 1950s and 60s Blues, R&B and Rock n’ Roll record label which launched such major artists as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Etta James. It’s a real historical eye opener, and Beyoncé’s turn as Etta James is particularly memorable. Worth seeing.

Back to the Future is showing today at 4.55pm on Five.

Couch Potato Pickings | The Howling, and the time of the month

The last time that werewolf movies prowled onto the TV schedules was a month ago, with  An American Werewolf in London, closely followed by Teen Wolf.

In June, these films had just missed the full moon and it’s happened yet again this month with The Howling tonight and a repeated showing of MJ Fox as a wolf on Sky Movies Comedy tomorrow. There’s definitely something lunar about the scheduling of these shapeshifting creature features.

In The Howling, troubled news anchor Dee Wallace Stone goes with her off and on-screen husband Christopher Stone to stay at a rural retreat that just happens to be run by werewolves.

Check out this clip featuring last month’s American werewolf transformation back to back with tonight’s monster metamorphosis from The Howling. Which one do you think is the more effective?

No, what do you think - wouldn’t it be great if TV schedulers started scheduling these werewolf features to show on full moon dates? How much fun would that be?

This month’s full moon was last Tuesday 7th July - the day of Michael ‘Moonwalker‘ Jackson’s memorial, which incidentally means that when the lovely Brooke Shields talked about Michael  perched in a crescent moon, she must have been imagining the King of Pop in another galaxy, because our local orb was as full as it could be.

And it’s especially because of Michael Jackson and last week’s full moon that my desire for a lycanthropic movie at this time of the month has increased substantially. You see I always get crazy dreams during this time and I’ve got used to them, but I tell you, a bit of wolf howling would have been far more welcome during my  slumbers than the relentless Michael Jackson soundtrack that accompanied my nocturnal adventures for two nights last week.

Clearly instigated by the non-stop Jacko media circus,  Billie Jean, Human Nature, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You and Man in the Mirror played on a loop on the first night. Being my favourite Jackson tracks this wasn’t too bad, just exhausting.

However, on the second night I was subjected to the mawkish We Are the World, Earth Song, and Heal the World as well as Say Say Say - not so good.

What’s most ironic considering it was a full moon, is that Thriller didn’t feature at all. So, glutton for punishment that I am, I’m posting a link to that here.

The Howling is showing tonight on ITV4 at 10.05pm

Couch Potato Pickings | Teen Wolf

Michael J Fox

In the wake of last weekend’s full moon it seems to have become a week of wolves with this, the second lycanthropic movie hitting the small screen within days.

Teen Wolf was made before Back to the Future, but after Michael J Fox’s time-travelling adventure stormed box offices here and across the pond it was wheeled out to ride on Fox’s coattails… or should that be Fox’s fox tail?

Anyway, it worked for me. I enjoyed it back then, being a teen and the film’s target audience. It’s basically the story of a high school kid who discovers he’s a werewolf and uses the condition to realise his dreams of becoming the school’s star basketball player. It’s entertaining and Fox’s transformations into a wolf add loads of exciting fun.

The question I always ask myself though when revisiting this movie is; why did it have to be basketball? Wouldn’t it have been more appropriate for the diminutive Fox to have baseball or soccer-related aspirations?

Michael J Fox

Well, apparently not. I read somewhere - but I don’t know how true it is - that the producers were so keen for the sport to be basketball that they chose only actors of Fox’s height when casting the other basketball team members. How considerate.

News Muse - London Premiere of 17 Again

Adele at the London Premiere of 17 Again
Last night, I went to the premiere of Zac Efron’s latest movie 17 Again, co-starring Matthew Perry and Leslie Mann. Remember when I got caught up in the Twilight premiere? Add more, many many more, shrieking pre-teen and teenage girls dressed to kill and you’ll get an idea of last night’s hysteria in Leicester Square as the little man arrived in his super sharp grey suit. Yep, he’s a wee one - the Michael J Fox of the noughties. I’m sure Zac too will be able to take on teenage roles well into his thirties, if he wants to. He’s already breaking free from the musical genre by turning down the Footloose remake to do supernatural tearjerker The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud instead. Smart move!

Now, with the risk of sounding very much like Matthew Perry’s character (while inside Zac Efron’s body), I must express my shock at how grown-up and revealing some of the outfits were on Zac’s young fans. Then again, Leslie Mann’s 10-year-old daughter licked her mother’s face on the day she shot the kissing scene with Efron because she wanted to, er, taste his spit…

Saliva aside, the movie is actually a lot funnier than I had expected. Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty much painting by numbers, after all the body swap theme and all its variations has been around the block a few times, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

Another child star all growed up is Lindsay Lohan, or Li-Lo as the tabloids like to call her. Unfortunately she is deflating fast these days. She may still be hitting the headlines with her drink/drugs issues and her constant rows with DJ girlfriend Sam Ronson - yawn - but does anyone ever talk about her acting?

Her latest film, Labor Pains, isn’t even getting a cinema release. Instead, its premiering on TV this summer and then getting a quick DVD release. Ouch!

No wonder Li-Lo has said she wants to give up acting all together - she could ask Joaquin Phoenix for advice. Although she doesn’t want to become a rap star, thank goodness. The fashion-conscious starlet wants to become a model, obviously.

Maybe she could model Gwyneth Paltrow’s clothes?! Gwynnie’s currently busy designing a 1970s inspired vintage clothing line with a French fashion label. Oh la la!

These Hollywood stars…they don’t need to be 17 again to correct past mistakes or change careers - they just do it all! Perhaps something for us all to aspire to?

Check out Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest (and Joaquin Phoenix’s last) movie, Two Lovers, which is out in cinemas today and well worth a look. Here’s the trailer:

The Secret of My Success

Couch Potato Pickings

On ITV1 today at 2.40pm

Do you remember when Michael J Fox was the hottest star in Hollywood?

News Muse - 1980s redux

It started in a subtle way. Top Gun-style Ray Bans became fashionable again. Then in snuck the legwarmers followed by the leggings, spandex waist belts and oversized tops. Then came Miami Vice the movie and the recent reunion of New Kids on the Block. Yep, the 1980s are sooo back!

Unfortunately, everything wasn’t hunkydory even in those days, and this week (here comes this post’s vague and only link to the News), yuppies of the noughties have been going through similar financial rollercoasters as their predecessors. Mergers, bankruptcies, redundancies, take-overs, the ‘credit crunch’…it’s looking uglier than a botoxed Michael Douglas.

So, considering we should all be careful with our pennies, what better way to save money than staying in all weekend, watching 80s movies and dancing and singing along to their overbearing soundtracks.

I’m proud to say that I still have this - on vinyl!

Here are my Top 5 power-dressing movies from the 1980s:

This one was not made in the 80s but captures the era, quotes Wall Street (!) and stars the brilliant Giovanni Ribisi.
