No, this isn’t the well-known 1988 River Phoenix thriller, but a 1982 Australian film about boy racers and their fast cars – specifically the Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase III – that came hot on the hills of the high-octane chase thriller, The Chain Reaction.

Former Prisoner Cell Block H actor Richard Moir plays Fox, one of Sydney’s fastest illegal street racers. But his life in the fast lane takes a dangerous corner when his obsession with speed and winning looks set to cost him his life.

But drama aside, the true stars of Running on Empty are the cars, and rev heads will get high on the fumes of the many rare and classic racing cars buzzing around the back streets of 1980s Sydney. So if you are a fan of Dodge Chargers, ‘57 Chevy’s and the aforementioned Ford Falcon muscle car, then this is the film for you. Vroom! Vroom!

Released 18 May
