It’s shocked me to learn today that racially segregated proms were still taking place this decade in Georgia, USA.
It was as recently as 2002 when one plucky schoolgirl decided to try and persuade parents and teachers within her community to rise above decades of racist tradition and allow her classmates to enjoy one integrated prom for one night. Read more about it here.
Today’s film is based on her story. It stars that precocious tot from The Cosby Show-turned-young adult actress-singer-dancer-producer Raven Symone. She plays the gutsy girl who attempts to change tradition, but finds her actions inflaming racial tensions within her town. Aisha Tyler (you might know her as Charlie Wheeler from Friends) plays a journalist who helps her and Jason Lewis (Smith from Sex And The City) stars as her teacher.
It’s an average TV movie but its eye-opening storyline deserves attention and it’s just got to be an easier watch than the film that was originally scheduled for Five USA’s 5pm slot today - Plague City: SARS in Toronto. In light of the growing hysteria that’s building over swine flu, thank goodness Five USA decided to pull that one, eh?
